“How are we living? Are we in reality prosperous? Will the coming generations be able to stand the nervous strain of city life? Must we go elsewhere to enjoy the fruits of independence? Must we go elsewhere?”

- Daniel Burnham (adapted by Norah Clifford and Robert Maggio)

WFC has called Chicago home for over 50 years. Chicagoans – in a city famous for its parks and lakefront – know what it means for the city and nature to collide.

But how has our city come to be? How have these collisions shaped the vibrant and diverse 77 neighborhoods that make up our city today? How do you capture in music (in sound, in rhythm, in pulse) the vibrance of Chicago?

In an exciting collaboration with percussion collaborative beyond this point, join WFC for Lungs of a City - a new work commissioned by American composer Robert Maggio exploring these questions through voice, percussion, and more.

Through the eyes of Daniel Burnham’s Plan of Chicago, we seek to find ways to connect with the natural world and embrace our urban life. Pelle Gudmenson-Holmgreen’s Three Stages, Joel Puckett’s I Enter the Earth and Jerod Impichchaachaaha’ Tate’s Visions of a Child round out this concert, shared as parallels that explore these connections and natural expansions in captivating ways.
